What is the requirment for a handrail for a glass balustrade?

According to BS 6180, the British Standard code of practice for barriers in and about buildings, the handrail should be attached to the glass in such a manner that, should a glass panel fracture, the handrail:

  1. will remain in position; and
  2. will not fail if the design load is applied across the resulting gap.
